Negative Attitude

March 2007

So, here I am sitting in front of my computer, wondering what this column will be about. I have been asking people all day what I should write about. The response I have been getting back is generally along the lines of, “Wow, I think it is great that you write the column. I couldn’t do it.” Thank you, but that doesn’t help.

So I asked my 10-year-old son what I should write about. He thought and then asked me what did what most people come in my office asking for help with. I told him relationships, but I didn’t want to write about that today. His response to my whine was, “Well, what is the next most frequent reason people come in?”

I realized that what I was doing was setting up blocks to my writing. I don’t know what to write about. I have already written about that. No, no, no. My son, very intelligently, didn’t get caught up in all of that and just re-directed me to a more pragmatic direction.

How many times have you been where I was this morning, refusing to see any positive and pushing it away if it got too close? If you keep saying, “I can’t, then you can’t. Try saying I can. When someone tries to point you in a more positive direction, allow yourself to at least look down that path before you reject it out of hand.

So, Noah, thank you so much for helping me get out of my negative mind-set and helping me to write this column. I love you, honey!
