Suicide So Sad

Suicide. I just read that Kate Spade committed suicide. I read every day about our vets committing suicide, about our teens committing suicide. People, famous or not so famous, choose to not continue living. It is a tragedy. The statistics are heartbreaking.

People commit suicide when they see no other option. Their field of vision has narrowed and there is only one way out. They believe, truly and deeply, that how they feel now, they will feel forever. However, that is simply not true.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Feelings ebb and flow. Things change. Life brings new things to us. I cannot tell you the number of people with whom I have worked where suicide was a serious option, then, after treatment and time, they are in a very different place. We have conversations about if they had committed suicide, they would have missed out on the relationship that they are in now, the job, the trip, the dog.

If suicide is an option for you right now, know that there is help available. There are people who care about you and will be there for you. Reach out to a friend, family member, teacher, clergy or a therapist. Call the National Suicide Prevention Life Line at 1-800-273-8255. They are staffed 24/7. You are not alone and there are options. Hold on and get help.
