Give Yourself Grace

Is it okay to ask for grace? Is it okay when you are overwhelmed and have not been able to complete your tasks to ask for more time? Is it okay when there have been many emotional things happening in your life to apologize and ask for support? Is it okay to admit that you need help?

The answer to all of these questions needs to be yes, but for so many people it appears that they do not give themselves that grace. If I ask a client who is struggling with this if they would extend forgiveness to a friend, the answer is always a resounding yes. But when it comes to themselves, the answer is an equally resounding no!

Why is that? How can we see that it is okay for others, but not us? Why are we so harsh with ourselves and so gentle with others? Who are we trying to impress? Whose rules are we following? We need to create a healthy way to treat ourselves. At least as gently as we treat others.

So, the next time that you are berating yourself, especially while in the middle of a crisis, stop. Ask yourself if this is what you would do to a friend.  Ask yourself how you would treat a friend. Then give yourself the same amount of grace!
