How Are You?

How are you doing today? A very common question which is normally answered, “Fine, and you?” But that answer is thrown out there without thought, without meaning, without any truth. So, stop for a second and ask yourself, how are you? Really? On all levels?

Start with your mood. Are you happy? Angry? Content? Lonely? On an emotional level what do you need to be at peace? On a relationship level, how healthy are your relationships? How equal, loving, considerate are they? How is your physical health? Are you eating healthy? Are you active? When is the last time that you had a physical? How are you on a spiritual level? Do you have a connection to something larger than you?

The first step towards being healthy is to honestly ask and answer those questions. The second step is to start making changes so that you are healthy on many levels! As you have asked those questions if your answer most of the time is that things are not good, what are you willing to do to make changes so that you can be, most of the time, healthy? Notice that I said, “most of the time”. It is impossible for this to be great all of the time. Aim for good enough, not perfection.

Begin to make a plan. Start small. What is one thing that you can do today that will begin to move you towards being healthier in one area of your life? Then do that! So that the next time someone asks, “How are you?” Your answer may be, “Getting better!”
