Procrastination

I am supposed to be writing my blog now. Yes, that is what I am supposed to be doing. But I don’t want to. I have nothing to write about. So, I am procrastinating. I can find, oh, so many things to do instead. I could read a book, pet a dog, call a friend. I could watch TV, play a game, well, almost anything sounds more fun right now!

This is not a phenomenon unique to me. Anytime we have something to do that we do not want to, we can get very creative in finding ways to avoid. Social media makes it even easier to avoid as we drop into that black hole! Why do we do this? Everything from lazy to not liking the task, to, like me right now, not knowing how to do it. Perhaps fear of judgment, of not being able to do it correctly. So many reasons. Once we understand the reason why we are not competing our task, then we can work on that so that we can complete what needs to be done. Perhaps we can choose a healthier way of doing things!

Some people like the adrenaline rush of doing things at the last moment. Good to know about yourself. However, is there a less stressful way of getting that rush? If you are always doubting your capabilities, get feedback on how you are doing. If you tend toward disorganization, create more structure for yourself.

My solution is often to just start a task. I play the game with myself that I only have to do it for 5 minutes. Because the hardest part is getting started. Once we get started, we can often complete it. And before we know it, our task, like this blog, is done!
